      <image:title>Salt Mine Waterdroplet</image:title>
<image:caption>Do you know that a massive network of hundreds of miles of tunnels exists beneath our feet as a result of salt mining in our region? This salt is mostly used to de-ice roads in the winter, but in the past salt has been used in food preservation, in industrial processes, and as an important part of the process for making ice cream. This grey-colored halite salt mined today by American Rock Salt Company, and previously by Akzo Nobel, Retsof, and Sterling Salt Mines, works to melt ice quickly. Today, American Rock Salt is a national player in the rock salt industry, producing as much as 3 million tons of salt per year.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Genesee River is one of the great waterways of the eastern United States. It flows for more than 150 miles from its origins in north-central Pennsylvania to Lake Ontario. It is also the only major river in the eastern US that runs from south to north. In this picture of the Big Tree, the river is portrayed as calm and peaceful. However, in the past the river could also be a source of danger, as reflected in the eroded banks in the painting. The following photos show the river at flood stage before the construction of the Mount Morris Dam in 1952. For much of the 19th and early 20th century, spring floods caused by melting snow and rain could cause devastating floods in Livingston County and Rochester.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Glen Avon Mills Flour Bag- This white canvas bag was used to hold pastry flour ground at the Glen Avon gristmill. A gristmill was on the site as early as 1810, though the early one burned in 1878. Emme Light built the current building in 1879 and it still exists, repurposed as a home. This mill was best known for “Sweet Violet” and “Daisy” pastry flours, produced around 1950. Geneseo Mills Sign -Farmers brought grain to the mills where it was processed into flour, bagged, and shipped to markets in large cities in the eastern United States. In 1920 the Geneseo Mill, or Big Tree Mills, was destroyed by fire at a loss of $100,000 and much grain and flour. It was operated by Tomkinson, Kenyon, and Tomkinson Co. around this time.  </image:caption>

<image:caption>West’s Flouring Mill (Charles Harry Eaton), 1881- To paint this oil on canvas painting of West’s Flouring Mill, the artist used a style of painting known as tonalism in which landscapes are depicted in soft light, with shadows. Erastus West (1794-1865), after whom this mill was named, came to Lakeville in 1815 from Pennsylvania. He was a prominent man in the town of Livonia and an inventor by trade. West was the first to introduce steam to power several of the mills he constructed, including this flour mill on the East side of the Conesus Lake outlet.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The top of this wooden box shows that a box was shipped to Hugh McBride via the Genesee Valley Canal to what is now known as Piffard (originally named Piffardinia and misspelled here as Piffardina). The Genesee Valley Canal was open from 1840-1878 and eventually connected the Erie Canal at Rochester to the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania. Although it never proved to be a profitable venture, the canal was important in carrying agricultural goods and raw materials out of the area and in bringing manufactured goods and new settlers into the Valley.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Flag Waterdroplet</image:title>
<image:caption>  Created in 1971 by Joe O’Dea, the Livingston County flag honors and symbolizes the uniqueness of our landscape and community. The scales of justice and quills represent Chancellor and judicial officer Robert Livingston after whom the county was named and who helped to draft the Declaration of Independence. Yellow represents the fields of golden ripe wheat that grow in our farms. Green represents nurseries and the pine and hemlock forests that grow on our hills and valleys. Ribbons of white represent salt and limestone, two important natural resources that have been important to the regions’ economy since the 19th century. Running through the middle of the flag is a bold swath of azure blue which represents the Genesee River and waterways.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ice Tongs Waterdroplet</image:title>
<image:caption>The ice saw, tongs, and pike pole seen here were used on Conesus Lake. Teams of as many as 100 men worked each winter to “harvest” ice. After the lake was frozen to a substantial depth, the surface would be marked out in “cakes” and a saw was used to cut the ice into blocks. The blocks were then pried apart using long-handled picks and chisels. Once separated, these chunks could be manipulated with tongs and pushed across the ice using a pike pole. Blocks of ice were transported by sled to various locations.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Underground Railroad Waterdroplet</image:title>
<image:caption>The Underground Railroad was a secret network organized by those opposed to slavery to help slaves travel to freedom. In the 1830s and 40s, slaves escaping from the south could find relative security in northern free states such as New York. After the passage of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act, runaway slaves moved through the Genesee Valley on their way to Canada. Although the term “railroad” implies a fixed transportation route, the Underground Railroad was actually a loose network of hiding places where fleeing slaves could find shelter and support.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Seneca Waterdrop</image:title>
<image:caption>Before the opening of western New York to white settlers in the 1790s, the Seneca, members of the Six Nations of the Iroquois League (Haudenosaunee), inhabited this region. The Seneca occupied what is today Livingston County, with the Genesee River marking the western boundary of their territory. This map from the early 1770s was prepared in a time before much exploration by Europeans had occurred. Important landmarks include “Chenussio,” which was a Seneca village located near the modern village of Geneseo, and the “Little Seneca River,” which is today known as the Genesee. Like most 18th century maps, this example contains a number of mistakes – for example, several of the Finger Lakes are missing.</image:caption>
